Tomoko Matsuoka, an artist from Kawagoe City, will exhibit her huge artwork “Flying Geese (Kari)” at Kawagoe City Museum of Art to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Kawasaki City.

A huge artwork “Flying Geese (Kari)” created by Tomoko Matsuoka and more than 500 citizens will be exhibited at Kawagoe City Museum of Art. This artwork, 10 meters wide by 3.5 meters high, was created for “KAWAGOE SUNRISE 2022”, the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Kawagoe City, which was held on May 14, 2022.

The “Wild Goose” is a bird recognized as the bird of Kawagoe City, and has many historical connections with Kawagoe, as it has long been included in poems describing the Kawagoe region and is also known as the “First Wild Goose Castle” in Kawagoe City. In this production, Tomoko Matsuoka drew a large figure of a wild goose and then asked over 500 citizens to put their handprints on it in various colors to complete the work.

After Tomoko Matsuoka painted, many citizens participated in the co-creation of the artwork with their “handprints”.

This will be Tomoko Matsuoka’s first exhibition at a museum. Please come and see it.
